What is ovulation?
Ovulation is when an ovary releases a mature egg into the fallopian tube. This process, controlled by LH and FSH hormones, usually occurs once per menstrual cycle. The released egg remains viable for only 12 to 24 hours, making ovulation a brief but crucial event in the female reproductive cycle.
How is the ovulation date calculated?
Our calculator uses the calendar method, based on the fact that the luteal phase (after ovulation) lasts an average of 14 days. By subtracting 14 days from your total cycle length, we get the probable day of your ovulation. For example, for a 30-day cycle, ovulation would occur around day 16 (30 - 14 = 16). This method is reliable for regular cycles.
Physical signs of ovulation
Your body sends several signals at the time of ovulation. Cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy and slippery (often compared to raw egg white). You may feel slight pain or a pulling sensation on one side of your lower abdomen, called "mittelschmerz". Your basal temperature rises slightly (0.2 to 0.5 degrees) after ovulation. Some women also notice an increase in libido and greater breast sensitivity.
Ovulation and hormonal health
Ovulation is an important indicator of your overall hormonal health. Anovulatory cycles (without ovulation) can occasionally occur without being a concern, but if they recur, they may signal a hormonal imbalance such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Tracking your ovulation over the months helps you better understand your body and identify any irregularities to report to your doctor.
